Product description

This 2020 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

Bursting onto the scene in 2003, Billy Talent's self-titled debut album is a high-energy punk rock experience that solidified the Canadian band's place in the music world. With a raw and powerful sound, this album is a testament to Billy Talent's ability to blend catchy melodies with hard-hitting lyrics, creating a sound that's both accessible and intense. The album kicks off with "This Is How It Goes," a track that immediately sets the tone for the rest of the record, and includes standout singles like "Try Honesty" and "River Below," which became fan favorites and radio staples. The album's 12 tracks clock in at just over 41 minutes, but it's a whirlwind of energy that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish. Produced under Atlantic Records, this debut showcases Billy Talent's unique blend of punk rock, drawing comparisons to bands like Anti-Flag and At the Drive-In. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Billy Talent's music, this album is a great introduction to the band's signature sound and a must-listen for any punk rock enthusiast.

  • MOV's Top-Notch Quality Shines

MOV delivers once again with their usual top-notch quality. This is another excellent pressing.

  • Superb Vinyl Pressing Quality

I just got this, still sealed. It's a fantastic pressing, top-notch quality, and it comes with a great antistatic sleeve. It's really well-balanced, with superb bass and highs. The high hats and kick drum sound amazing on this. I'm not sure about the other review mentioning it's from a digital source, this album came out during the prime CD era so it's bound to sound similar. But I do think the drums are a bit more enjoyable on this than on the CD.

  • Impressive Pressing Despite Flaws

    4 out of 5 stars

Eight years on, I'm still really digging this pressing. It's VERY impressive considering the source material's limitations. I've never had the MOV to compare, but I'm so into this one that I don't even want any CD or digital version. I still agree with my earlier points about the inconsistent Optimal quality control, and I forgot to mention that both sides are pressed off-center, causing a bit of pitch wobble. If your copy's like that and it bugs you, think about a removable-spindle Dual or Technics changer, or manually center the grooves by widening the spindle hole. The transients are crisp across the spectrum...guitars cut through melodically, and the drum hits are punchy. The EQ's got a weird big bump in the lower-mids, making the bottom end and mids sound boomy. That said, it's not limited/compressed in the low bass like that overrated Sean Magee at Abbey Road tends to do for some reason. The top end is bright and boosted, and while the cymbals aren't the most detailed (I think there's some light compression/de-essing up there?), they're crisp with nice decay and really cut through without being annoying. There's some noticeable compression, typical for music of this era, mostly on the drums, but it's never fatiguing or harsh. The soundstage is airy & open, and most importantly, it captures the energy, musicianship, and ANGST that's so vital to this awesome music. ONE BIG ISSUE: I got my copy new on RSD 2017. On a conical stylus, at the end of each side, not only is there annoying IGD but the high frequencies are completely SHOT. That's right -- the end-of-side high frequency loss is FAR worse than the average record, which suggests the metalwork's been worn out. It makes sense, as this has literally the same matrix numbers as the original 2003 pressing. Someone else on another variant of this pressing suggests an elliptical might help. If you can deal with that, crank it up to eleven and bang your f'n head! Love these guys. Way more creative and interesting than a lot of pop punk music which sounds too mushy and loudness-warred for my taste.

  • Billy Talent's Debut: Raw, Energetic Punk

    4 out of 5 stars
    BpawtFabrirJequjwcApril 19, 2025United States🇺🇸

Billy Talent, in my opinion, stands as the pinnacle of mainstream melodic punk bands to emerge from my country over the last twenty years. Their debut album on a major label is an excellent starting point for newcomers - it's packed with track after track of intricate songwriting, an astonishing wall of drop-D guitars layered to perfection, and bold, impassioned vocal harmonies. The result is a fierce, venomous burst of raw energy that maintains its intensity throughout the album's 41-minute runtime and 12 tracks. To be honest, it's a potent dose of unfiltered anger, yet not a single track disappoints. The creative formula is consistently effective, and the musical diversity exceeds expectations. It captures the rebellious spirit of Green Day but elevates it with a more pronounced melodic element that will captivate rock enthusiasts throughout. Highly recommended!I managed to find this specific pressing, complete with all the described and displayed features, at a local record store during RSD 2017. The sound quality is quite good, though not exceptional. While I believe it offers better dynamics than digital versions, the soundstage remains quite dense, and the EQ is strangely tilted towards the higher frequencies. It's a bit of a step back, but it still delivers a solid punch. Occasionally, the drums get slightly lost in the mix due to compression, but not to the point of sounding 'castrated' - they remain punchy and clear! For me, compressed masters are acceptable as long as there's some space and openness in the mix (yes, even with brickwall-limited masters!) and the EQ is well-balanced. The 2014 EU vinyl pressing of Night Visions by Imagine Dragons is a case in point - despite similar compression, it sounds better and fuller than this album due to the EQ choices. I personally prefer the sound quality of that pressing.Who knows if the cutting engineer opted for this approach because of the album's loud and compressed master, combined with its duration. I wish the lower end was clearer, as even with the bass knob on the BBE 'razz box' turned up all the way, it doesn't shake the floor like some other recent pressings I've owned. Though, turning up that knob does make the bass more audible. I suspect the cutting engineer could have included more bottom end while keeping everything on a single LP if the master were more dynamic. Consider the magic Chris Bellman achieved with AM by Arctic Monkeys. The Optimal-pressed vinyl is decent, with only one minor visible defect causing a subtle noise patch every revolution in the silence before and after A1. One issue is the plain-paper inner sleeve - the vinyl, pressed in Germany, is prone to static, and the plain paper sleeve exacerbates this. It wouldn't have cost much for the label to invest in Optimal's excellent poly-lined paper inners.
