Product description

This 2LP set was released in 2012.

John Mayer's fifth studio album, "Born and Raised," released on May 22, 2012, under Columbia Records, marks a significant evolution in the singer-songwriter's musical style. This 13-track collection, spanning 49 minutes, delves into the realms of folk and Americana, drawing inspiration from legendary artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and the harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The album's cover art, along with the single "Queen of California," sets the tone for Mayer's exploration of a more stripped-down, rootsy sound.

"Born and Raised" opens with the title track, a reflective ballad that sets the stage for the album's introspective journey. Mayer's signature guitar work is evident throughout, but it's the subtle, acoustic-driven arrangements that truly shine. Tracks like "The Age of Worry" and "Shadow Days" showcase Mayer's knack for crafting relatable lyrics that resonate with listeners, while "Speak for Me" and "Something Like Olivia" highlight his storytelling prowess. The album also features a reprise of the title track, providing a bookend to this sonic exploration.

Despite initial mixed reviews, John Mayer has since expressed his affection for "Born and Raised," considering it one of his favorites. The album's simplicity and laid-back vibe offer a refreshing change of pace from Mayer's earlier, more polished works. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer to John Mayer's music, "Born and Raised" offers a compelling listen that showcases the artist's growth and versatility.

Absolutely fantastic album, with a stunning pressing and packaging. Super flat, dynamic, and a gorgeous gatefold sleeve. Snatch it up if you come across it.

  • John Mayer's Redemption Album

    5 out of 5 stars
    TimezumoeguyaxFebruary 22, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

Before "Born and Raised," John Mayer's career took a nosedive. The artist who began by penning solo acoustic tunes in his Atlanta apartment's bathroom and performing in coffeehouses eventually found himself headlining arenas and dating high-profile celebrities. He was hosting TV shows and speaking his mind without a filter. This all led to a disastrous Playboy interview and taking jabs at his exes on "Battle Studies." After facing significant backlash, John took a step back, relocated to a Montana ranch, and returned to his acoustic roots. He started writing songs again and teamed up with Don Was to produce what would become "Born and Raised," his personal metaphor for rising from the ashes. These are truly excellent songs, showcasing a more mature songwriter who chose to express himself through music rather than words. Several tracks are simply brilliant, including "Queen of California," "Something Like Olivia," and what might be one of his best songs ever, "Walt Grace." The album is equally brilliant, presenting these songs as they should be heard. Often, it feels like you're in the room with John as he plays them. The vinyl is crisp, assertive, well-balanced, and a pure joy to listen to. Even if you're not a fan of John's other work, this edition is worth a spin, as you might just change your mind about him and remember what an incredible musician he is.

  • Queen of California Outro

    5 out of 5 stars

Incredible - this record has been my top JM album for ages, but this version just blows it out of the water. The bongos and all those guitar layers in the outro of Queen of California? Out of this world! The mastering here really widens the sound and makes the mix sound huge! Super impressed.

  • Mayer's Top-Notch Record

    4 out of 5 stars
    VhiikkjzX492August 8, 2024United States🇺🇸

This record is truly top-notch, as many have pointed out. The bass is incredibly deep, and the clarity across all tracks is outstanding. The only tiny flaw I noticed was a scratch on side D, right at the beginning of "A Face To Call Home," which resulted in a couple of noticeable pops. This album is likely my 3rd or 4th favorite from Mayer - it's been growing on me and is a fantastic listen.

  • John Mayer's Best Album

    5 out of 5 stars
    PdonLgYhehJune 6, 2024United States🇺🇸

In my opinion, John Mayer's finest album is this one. I got to experience both the CD and vinyl versions included in the set. The vinyl sounds more vibrant. As usual, Bob Ludwig did an excellent job.
