  • Coltrane's Timeless Jazz Mastery

    5 out of 5 stars
    qtluqwecDecember 5, 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is a fantastic representation of Coltrane's high-fidelity sound. It's another brilliant testament to his immense talent. It resonates with the traditions of the past (Soul Train, Blue Train, and undoubtedly Giant Steps), and it seamlessly fits with his other works from around the same time (My Favorite Things, Crescent, and even a hint of A Love Supreme). The quartet is, in my opinion, the ideal setup for 'Trane: McCoy Tyner is the perfect counterpart to Coltrane's soloing. Coltrane may be the genius and the leader, but Tyner is phenomenal throughout. A quick note: there are a few tracks where Tyner takes a step back, which are equally captivating—perhaps even more so for jazz enthusiasts who crave glimpses of 'Trane exploring new avenues. Coltrane was undoubtedly a jazz intellectual: always delving into the intricacies of a song, playing it differently each time, respecting the past yet relentlessly driven to turn the room upside-down with his 'free"-ness, which was barely containable at this stage (perhaps only reined in by RVG's hand in shaping the structure of a "record," as opposed to just letting the tape capture whatever unfolded during a live performance). And it's impossible to listen to Coltrane without feeling intellectually stimulated and challenged. Yet, the first thing that strikes you is an emotional, visceral response. Hearing the accomplished, confident 'Trane here is like entering a building where, far off in the distance, something incredibly magnetic instantly tugs at you in a way you simply can't comprehend with your mind, only with your heart. You navigate through the halls, up the stairs, down the stairs, and, finally, into the space 'Trane and his band occupy. You wonder if you'll leave this place with everything you brought into it: certainly, parts of you are melting and pooling at your feet. And perhaps that's exactly the point. You won't leave as you came; you'll leave with something new, different, better, inside you. You leave with 'Trane.

  • Warped But Worth It

    3 out of 5 stars
    jafgvauxobgNovember 30, 2025United States🇺🇸

Picked it up at Rough Trade West. It's a tad warped, but my turntable handles it just fine. Super quiet, with a wide dynamic range and killer bass. I wonder if I'm missing out by not having the extra tracks on the deluxe edition.

Must-have wax, fantastic quality as well. It's a necessity.

  • Mixed Feelings on Audio Quality

    3 out of 5 stars
    huunm3October 18, 2025United States🇺🇸

Upon listening, I must admit I was a tad let down, though I do consider that the mastering isn't up to the standards of that era, like Dr. Rudy Van Gelder's work. I appreciate the music, but the mixing isn't to my liking. To be honest, I'm not sure about the original recording's condition or its quality. There's a bit of a muddy, boomy mid-bass from the acoustic bass that I'm not fond of. Plus, many notes seem to have the same tone. Also, I can't seem to pick up a sound stage at all; every instrument is either dead center or in a tiny box. Oddly enough, looking at the photos, there are at least four microphones used. On a few tracks, Elvin Jones' drums are barely audible... Elvin Jones. Might be worth keeping for historical value, though. I mostly listen to original recordings, not reissues, so the differences might be more noticeable to me than to someone who listens to the opposite.

  • RVG's Pleasant Audio Quality

    5 out of 5 stars
    DkvipapaMay 26, 2025United States🇺🇸

The audio quality is good, though it's important to note that the original recording wasn't given much care by RVG. That said, it's still quite pleasant to listen to.
