Product description

This 2022 Reissue LP is pressed on Clear vinyl.

Dive into the vibrant world of jazz with Roy Haynes' "Cymbalism," a timeless album originally released in 1963 and reissued in 2011 under the Jazz Room label. This hard bop and bebop masterpiece spans a concise yet impactful 40 minutes, featuring seven tracks that showcase Haynes' exceptional drumming skills and his ability to lead a dynamic quartet.

Joined by Frank Strozier on alto sax and flute, Ronnie Mathews on piano, and Larry Ridley on bass, Haynes crafts a sonic journey that is both energetic and intricate. The album kicks off with the title track "Cymbalism," setting the tone with relentless propulsion and a fizzling brio that keeps the listener engaged. Each track, from "As Long As There's Magic" to "Con Alma," is a testament to the musicians' prowess and their collective ability to blend various jazz styles seamlessly.

"Cymbalism" is not just an album; it's a celebration of jazz in its purest form. Haynes' drumming is particularly noteworthy, with his sticks dancing on the cymbals, creating a rhythmic tapestry that underpins the melodic and harmonic explorations of his bandmates. The album's reissue ensures that new generations of jazz enthusiasts can appreciate the timeless quality of Haynes' work.

Whether you're a seasoned jazz aficionado or a curious newcomer, "Cymbalism" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. It's a snapshot of a bygone era, captured with the precision and passion that only Roy Haynes and his ensemble could deliver. So, plug in your headphones and let the magic of "Cymbalism" transport you to the heart of jazz.

  • Outstanding Sound Quality

    5 out of 5 stars
    naxbxanwujJanuary 11, 2026United States🇺🇸

The sound quality is outstanding, offering a lively audio experience. This specific release features a crisp, warm, and silent playback, with impeccably balanced highs, bass, and mid-range tones. Although a tad more volume might be nice, the overall audio journey makes up for this small detail. A definite must-have if you can't get your hands on the original.

  • Loud, Dark, and Muddy

    3 out of 5 stars
    xnijelmqyrfofFebruary 5, 2025United States🇺🇸

A tad loud: some hiss, random crackle & pop. Awesome music, though mixed a bit "dark". Calm, as one note, and a hint muddy, mainly during the bass solo on B1 “La Palomeinding”. Might just be the recording though.

  • Quiet Mastering, Great Sound

    4 out of 5 stars
    qmurdoywsupDecember 26, 2024United States🇺🇸

I concur with the prior remarks regarding the quiet mastering. The benefit is that, particularly for clear vinyl, the pressing is completely silent. I, for one, didn't detect it being “dark” or “muddy” beyond the usual van gelder “sound.” Excellent definition of cymbals and hi-hats. Nice, full-bodied snare sound. Definitely not a bad opportunity to get a great record that would be hard to find in good condition otherwise unless you're loaded. I'm usually not into reissues.
