Was pleasantly surprised by how good the vinyl sounds on this. Very clear and dynamic with a wide sound.
Songwriting-wise, I give this album a 3.5. The Looking Glass is one of Dream Theater's best songs in years, even if similar to Limelight by Rush. Enigma Machine and Illumination Theory bring some fresh and interesting stuff to the table. I'm also fond of The Bigger Picture, especially lyrically. Surrender To Reason is a bit of a Rush overload having already had one track (The Looking Glass) which is heavily Rush-influenced.Production-wise, I give this album a one. First of all, it's a "loudness war" album which has been compressed into oblivion. Petrucci's guitars even have audible clipping on them. The drums sound like crap. How do you take Mike Mangini and make him sound worse than many drum sample libraries? The keyboards are also super thin and tinny sounding on False Awakening Suite and the "Lucky Man" solo of Along For The Ride. It's pretty staggering they brought Rich Chycki back to produce another album, because his work here was not up to snuff. The Winter Rose album he produced actually sounds way better because it's not annoyingly technologically processed.
This 2LP set was released in 2013.
