VMP has done it again with another stunning release. The records are thick, perfectly flat, and the orange color really pops. The sturdy gatefold cover completes the excellent packaging. The sound quality is fantastic, warm and well-balanced, with no noise between tracks. This album was definitely in my top ten hip hop picks for 2022. The beats are by Soundtrakk, and I recall hearing that Lupe Fiasco wrote and recorded the entire album in just about four days. The cover art is an original oil painting by the artist himself. Played on my Fluance RT-81 TT with an Ortofon 2M blue stylus, Fluance PA-10 preamp, Pioneer VSX-516 Receiver, Marantz SX-9 Speakers, and Klipsch R-101 SW.
Having now experienced Drill Music in Zion in three formats - digital download, CD, and vinyl, I must say the vinyl version is my top pick. Firstly, this album is fantastic. The lyrics are profound and well-crafted, with Lupe delivering his rhymes with skill and assurance over jazzy, soulful, and mellow beats that together create a smooth flow. DMIZ is very cohesive and an engaging, timely record - it fits my COVID-era mood; thoughtful, reflective, and searching. The vinyl edition is expertly mastered, pressed on flat/quiet blue vinyl, warm sounding and perfect for a deep listen. The tracks are spread over three sides with an etched fourth side, it’s a compact listen (about 40 mins) that overall feels complete. My favorite hip hop release so far this year, especially effective on vinyl.
I'm so into how they made one side a regular 2-sided vinyl, but then they went and took the other side out and swapped that shit for a piece of the album's artwork. Lupe's the best!
