Fossora - Björk

Product description

This is a 2023 Limited Edition Repress released as a 2LP set.

Björk's eleventh studio album, Fossora, is a deeply rooted exploration of the natural world, delving into the earthy and elemental. Released on 30 September 2022 via One Little Independent Records, this 54-minute masterpiece weaves a complex tapestry of sound, blending art pop and trip hop genres. The album's title, derived from the Latin word for "digging", reflects Björk's immersion in the terrestrial and the organic, earning it the nickname "my album about mushrooms".

Fossora is the culmination of a creative process that began in mid-2019, with Björk working tirelessly alongside long-time collaborator Bergur Þórisson, particularly during the 2020 lockdown. The result is a rich and intricate soundscape, featuring a string quintet recorded in Víðistaðakirkja, Hafnarfjörður, and guest appearances by Serpentwithfeet and Emilie Nicolas.

The album's thirteen tracks, including 'Atopos', 'Ovule', and 'Ancestress', showcase Björk's innovative production and arrangement skills, with Eivind Helgerød contributing to the album's sonic landscape. From the haunting 'Sorrowful Soil' to the enchanting 'Fagurt Er í Fjörðum', each song is a testament to Björk's boundless creativity and her ability to craft music that is both deeply personal and universally relatable.

With Fossora, Björk invites listeners to embark on a sonic journey that is at once intimate and expansive, exploring themes of nature, architecture, and the interconnectedness of all things. This album is a testament to Björk's status as a visionary artist, pushing the boundaries of music and sound to create something truly unique and unforgettable.

  • Black Vinyl Triumphs

    5 out of 5 stars
    muaxkapirDecember 22, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

Indecisive about the color, I opted for the classic black vinyl version—and I'm genuinely grateful I did. I'd heard concerns about pressing flaws, pops, clicks, and background noise, but I was happily surprised to find that the (or at least my) black pressing is of demo disc quality. The sound is holographic, filling the room, and the vinyl is super clear and quiet, with just one tiny click during the entire album (first play, no cleaning). Maybe I got lucky, or perhaps the black vinyl, which is also much cheaper compared to the colored variants, is the way to go here. I also listened to the CD master and the 24/96 FLAC digital version. Many people seem to prefer the "updated" version 1.1 mix with the children's voices in the background and the softer beats. But having heard the digital version of Fossora before, I still prefer the "original 1.0" mix on vinyl. I suppose for fans, it's essential to own or at least listen to both mixes—my choice is made. It's also the first Björk album in a long time that I feel completely immersed in since "Biophilia," which is now 10 years old. Björk is 56 now, yet her persona feels timeless. Artistically, the new LP brings back that classic Björk sound and adds a touch of magic mushroom mycelia. I really enjoy this music. And if you're worried about pressing quality, I'd recommend going for black here, despite all those other pretty colors—that is, if sound quality matters to you. You can always add your own colors while listening :)

  • Lime's Adorable, Atopos Art Fits

lime's adorable, but I reckon Atopos single art suits it more than the album cover does.

  • Vinyl Download Code Query

Does anyone know if a download code comes with this vinyl edition, considering the vocals are absent?

  • Misprinted Disc Received

    5 out of 5 stars
    plaeysolvfuddanSeptember 28, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

I think I received a misprinted version of this color option. The label on side B of disc one is white. Has anyone else gotten a copy like this?

  • Solid Album Pick

    5 out of 5 stars
    ozoibCUyixijiraSeptember 23, 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm planning to get the clear vinyl version of this album as a present later this year, so I decided to purchase this variant to enjoy in the meantime. The audio quality is crisp, although the high notes are a tad underwhelming (a strange problem that seems to plague many of Björk’s albums). There's barely any surface noise, and the discs are perfectly flat. I'm thrilled that this release includes the cover with the larger mushrooms, which I personally prefer over the smaller mushroomed artwork. All in all, it's a solid pick-up!
