I'm absolutely in love with this album, but sadly, my copy is far from perfect. It's filled with annoying pops, crackles, and even a bit of warping. My needle's been jumping around more than Destiny's Child did in '99! It's really let me down. I'm really hoping they'll re-release it on 2 LPs with a better mastering and pressing.
This album is absolutely incredible. It could very well be her masterpiece. It's now 2023, around six years since its release, and I'm discovering new appreciation for it, especially in the past year. It was ahead of its time, or perhaps when it came out, I was too young, too indifferent to grasp the themes or the direction. Alicia took a bold, possibly brilliant, step here, and I'm fine that it wasn't commercially celebrated. She addresses war, racism, poverty, same-sex relationships, blended families, sexism, immigration, climate change, and more without sounding preachy, condescending, flat, pretentious, or over-the-top. It's like a hidden treasure in her discography for a specific group of fans she's gathered over the years, the perhaps die-hard ones who love her more for her soulful sound infused with hip-hop, jazz, and funk vibes. It's not for everyone, and that's okay. For people like us, it outshines some of the more commercially successful albums. This right here is THE GOSPEL. HERE. 👑
Sadly, the audio- and pressing quality isn't top-notch. The record arrived quite grimy with just a basic paper sleeve. My copy has noticeable crackles and pops even after cleaning. Might as well go digital… 😞
