Product description

This is a 2023 Reissue released as a 2LP set.

Sufjan Stevens' fifth studio album, Illinois, is a captivating exploration of the American state, delving into its rich history, notable figures, and poignant events. Released on 5 July 2005 through Asthmatic Kitty, this chamber pop and baroque pop masterpiece is the second instalment in Stevens' ambitious '50 States Project', which began with his breakthrough album Michigan in 2003.

Featuring 22 tracks, including 'Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois', 'The Black Hawk War, Or, How to Demolish an Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself In the Morning', and 'John Wayne Gacy, Jr.', Illinois is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged journey through the state's complex past. From the World's Columbian Exposition to the story of Casimir Pulaski, Stevens weaves a intricate narrative that is both deeply personal and universally relatable.

With its 74-minute duration, Illinois is an epic spectacle that showcases Stevens' exceptional storytelling ability and musical prowess. The album's intricate arrangements and poetic lyrics create a sense of depth and nuance, drawing the listener into a world of historical and cultural significance. As a testament to Stevens' innovative spirit, Illinois has been adapted into a musical, further solidifying its place in the annals of American music.

Through Illinois, Sufjan Stevens invites listeners to immerse themselves in the state's fascinating history, exploring themes of identity, community, and the human experience. This seminal album is a must-listen for fans of chamber pop and baroque pop, and a powerful example of Stevens' boundless creativity and artistic vision.

  • Top-Notch Pressing, Highly Recommended

    5 out of 5 stars
    XbyavukwJanuary 2, 2026United States🇺🇸

In my opinion, this is a top-notch pressing. I previously owned a standard reissue, which I sold to get this version, and as soon as I played it, I noticed a huge improvement in sound quality. The sound is incredibly quiet, dynamic, and the discs are flat and glossy. The colors are visually appealing and match the album perfectly. I'm genuinely thrilled to finally have this pressing. If you come across a good deal, I'd highly recommend grabbing it.

  • Annual Auditory Delight

    5 out of 5 stars
    Ttili_EzihemNovember 30, 2025United States🇺🇸

My version sounds absolutely amazing, I usually listen to this once a year in its entirety. Bummer to hear about other folks' troubles.

  • Pressing Pleasant Despite Flaws

    4 out of 5 stars
    JoxvstoaNovember 26, 2025United States🇺🇸

In my opinion, my pressing doesn't sound as poor as others have mentioned, apart from side D which had quite a few pops and crackles. But all in all, it's still a pleasant listening experience.

  • Vintage Press Delivers

    5 out of 5 stars
    supzfgOctober 17, 2025United States🇺🇸

After a long search, I managed to get my hands on this one. It's a solid press. It's not anything extraordinary since it was just a standard press back then, but it's definitely not a bad one either. My copy was clearly well-loved, but it still sounds fantastic!

  • Vinyl Sounds Pristine

    5 out of 5 stars
    VhizkinvawSeptember 27, 2025United States🇺🇸

This record is in pristine condition, with hardly any surface noise or pops. I gave it an ultrasonic clean before playing it. The sound quality is amazing, with great dynamics and clarity. I'd definitely suggest this to anyone wanting to enjoy this brilliant album. I've got the original CD, and this vinyl version just feels better.
