Product description

This LP was released in 2021.

Dive into the sultry, cool jazz sounds of Ben Webster's "Live at Pio's," a captivating live album recorded in 1964 but not released until 1974. This enchanting collection features Webster, the legendary tenor saxophonist, in a live setting at Pio's Lodge in Providence, Rhode Island, backed by a superb rhythm section comprising Junior Mance on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums.

The album opens with the lively "Cookin' for T" and continues with a mix of standards and jazz favorites, including "Gone with the Wind," "Sunday," "Pennies from Heaven," "How Long Has This Been Going On," and "Sometimes I'm Happy." Each track showcases Webster's signature warm, velvety tone and masterful improvisational skills, making this a quintessential cool jazz experience.

"Live at Pio's" is a testament to Webster's enduring legacy in the jazz world. The album's short, engaging tracks highlight his ability to convey deep sentiment and swing with equal measure. The rhythm section provides a solid foundation, allowing Webster's saxophone to soar and captivate. Whether you're a longtime fan of Ben Webster or new to his music, this album offers a rich, immersive journey into the heart of cool jazz.

Audio quality isn't great. Lacks dynamics. Piano recording is poor.

  • Webster's Pio's Performances

    4 out of 5 stars

Quite a captivating set. According to AllMusic, this compilation features two performances at Pio’s, one from February 1964 and the other from July 1973. I'm not entirely convinced. There's no noticeable variation between the tracks in terms of microphone placement (which isn't ideal) or the musicians involved. The sound quality is decent, but it's far from audiophile standards (I'm unsure why Pure Pleasure chose to reissue this, apart from the historical and musical significance of the performances). That said, the musicianship is superb. Both Ben Webster and Junior Mance are on top of their game here. This album isn't hard to find and is definitely worth picking up.

Awful quality and it sounds real bad. Wouldn't suggest it. Send it back to the seller ...
