Soundgarden's 2013 North American tour, which took place in intimate clubs, was an entirely different experience compared to any other tour I attended between 1994 and 2014. I was aware that they professionally recorded the final show of the three-night stint at the Wiltern. Since then, I've probably sent around 10 emails, spaced out over time, asking, "Hey guys, any chance that Soundgarden show you recorded MIGHT hit Blu-ray at some point?" And after Chris' passing, it felt even more crucial that they release this documentation of Soundgarden's peak tour. So, when it was finally announced this year, I was over the moon! And this morning at 8am, the postman delivered the Blu-ray right to my door. 1080p24 high bit-rate AVC/MPEG-4 video and lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio (or stereo PCM option too) - this is the genuine article. The picture quality is fantastic, and the 5.1 mix is breathtaking. The stereo mix is also incredibly dynamic, with no loudness wars mastering here. This is truly a well-crafted Blu-ray that lives up to the occasion. Why is the Blu-ray the superior choice? Well, with the vinyl, you get the same digital master, but it's gone through the extra step of being cut for vinyl, and it's spread over 8 sides, meaning you'd flip records 7 times to listen to the entire show, which breaks the flow. With the CDs, you're going from a 24/48 master to a 16/44.1 CD master, and the show is split into two halves, so you're changing discs at the midpoint. With the Blu-ray, if you just want to listen, you can turn your TV off and play the show, hearing it as it was that night, with no interruptions from start to finish, listening directly to the original master in its original bit depth and sampling rate. No additional conversions, no side gaps, just pure rock and roll, all for a quarter of the cost of the vinyl and seemingly cheaper than the CD too. Perfect! It's like you're getting the studio master for less than the two inferior formats, and I'm not against CDs or vinyl, but when you have the source material, it seems that's the way to go. Give me an all-analogue-cut vinyl of an album that was recorded and mixed entirely to tape like The Beatles in Mono sets? Absolutely, I'll buy the vinyl without hesitation. We finally have a definitive live document of Soundgarden, and it's absolutely worth having in your collection. Purchase it without any hesitation. I'll welcome any and all Soundgarden live releases they can dig up from the archives, but it's wonderful to finally have such a great performance for home video with a glorious surround track. This one is going to get a lot of playtime.
I must say, this box set might just be the finest I've ever come across. It's absolutely flawless, and the care put into the details and the sound quality is truly outstanding. They really outdid themselves with this one...Fantastic.
