  • Brubeck's Disappointing Lullabies

    2 out of 5 stars
    jwwiihyouyaMarch 7, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

I genuinely adore Dave Brubeck’s earlier work, and I’m not saying this album is bad or shouldn’t be cherished by fans, but Lullabies just isn’t my cup of tea. The music is so cheesy it’s almost painful. As Brubeck mentions in the liner notes, he’s recreating the lullabies his mom played for him and his siblings as they fell asleep, a tradition he continued with his own kids. His mom even believed in playing music for children in the womb, which made me half-chuckle and feel like I was being talked down to with this album, especially when Brubeck said he envisioned this music—originals and covers alike—for children and older listeners. At nearly 70, I still love jazz’s complexities, still seek out mind-blowing psychedelic experiences on the couch, and still rock out to rock n’ roll. The music here is way too simple, even with some counterpoints and contrasts. It’s just background noise, forgettable and unremarkable. Sure, not all jazz needs to be challenging, but considering everything Brubeck has experienced in over 60 years, all the inspiration he should have had, and all he could come up with is this sleepy, uninspired collection of lackluster tunes. This, his last formal album, feels like Brubeck phoning it in, resting on his laurels, and saying, “I know, I’ll jazz up some lullabies.” It’s a disappointing swan song, leaving me wishing for my money and time back. That said, if you want something easy-going and unpretentious, Lullabies might be your jam. I hope you find some polished satisfaction and drifting splendor in it… though I think you’ll find yourself doing something else while it plays, instead of appreciating the joy Mr. Brubeck once brought into the world.

  • Brubeck's Underappreciated Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    Rzukeguoug_NmucsJuly 16, 2024United States🇺🇸

Dave Brubeck's truly moving and serene album is an absolute gem that's criminally underrated. It's baffling how this masterpiece isn't more widely known and cherished, particularly among Brubeck enthusiasts! The vinyl is flawlessly flat, eerily quiet, and was pressed at Sterling with mastering by Ryan K. Smith—what else could you possibly want? Grab a copy before they're gone!
