Dive into the avant-garde world of jazz with Albert Ayler's 1968 masterpiece, "New Grass." This groundbreaking album is a unique duet featuring Ayler on tenor saxophone and Bill Folwell on electric bass, with additional support from Call Cobbs on piano and Bernard Purdie on drums. Released on Impulse! Records, "New Grass" is a bold exploration of free jazz, blending elements of hard bop and soul jazz to create a sound that was ahead of its time.

The album opens with the fiery "Message From Albert / New Grass," setting the tone for the rest of the record with its intense and ferocious energy. Throughout the seven tracks, Ayler's distinctive saxophone work shines, showcasing his innovative approach to jazz. • Jazz Fusion's Bold Rebellion

    5 out of 5 stars

Upon its release, "New Grass" was met with quite a bit of hostility from dedicated Jazz enthusiasts and critics alike. This is, without a doubt, a rebellious album that blends Jazz, Soul, and Funk in a manner that's often frenetic and almost psychedelic. It evokes the likes of Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Funkadelic, or even Frusciante... "New Grass" remains lively and invigorating, its creativity, originality, and genuineness continue to astonish. One finds themselves wanting to replay the album or certain tracks as soon as it's over... it lingers in your mind although it takes some time to unveil all of its bold, concealed charm... and let's not forget: its wit!
