Product description

This is a 1990 Reissue released as a LP.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' second studio album, "The Firstborn Is Dead," is a captivating exploration of the American South, released on June 3, 1985, via Mute Records. Produced by the band and Flood, this album is a testament to Nick Cave's enduring fascination with the blues and the cultural landscape of the Southern United States. Recorded in the iconic Hansa Studios in Berlin, the album is rich with references to legendary bluesmen like Blind Lemon Jefferson and the King of Rock 'n' Roll himself, Elvis Presley.

"The Firstborn Is Dead" stands out with its dominant blues influence, marking a significant shift in the band's sound. The album's seven tracks, including standouts like "Tupelo" and "Say Goodbye to the Little Girl Tree," are infused with a raw, evocative energy that transports the listener to the heart of the Deep South. The album's introspective lyrics and powerful instrumentation create a haunting atmosphere that resonates long after the final note fades.

The album's cover art, featuring a stark black and white image, complements the music's dark, brooding tone. "The Firstborn Is Dead" is a seminal work in Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' discography, showcasing the band's unique ability to blend post-punk sensibilities with traditional blues and country influences. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer to Nick Cave's music, this album is a compelling introduction to the band's early sound and a testament to their enduring artistic vision.

  • Nick Cave's Southern Nightmares

    5 out of 5 stars
    Duvedet_DeolyaAugust 20, 2025United States🇺🇸

This one's a crazy plunge into Nick Cave’s peculiar obsession with the American South—drenched in blues, gothic, and oddly romantic. Here, Tupelo growls like a legend born from swampy threats and Elvis tales, while “Black Crow King” and “Train Long-Suffering” summon desert specters and chains on tracks. It’s a blues album, but one reimagined by a poet from another world—something you’ll experience, not just listen to. Why this version stands apart: Berlin’s Hansa Studio vibe seeps through—there’s uncooked, cinematic terror in every scratch, as if the studio walls held the spirits of train crashes and gens in chains. Compared to his first album, this one clears the haze: the production lets Cave’s voice and the Bad Seeds’ unrelenting beats strike harder. You feel every snare, every slide guitar strike. Lyrically, it’s a wild collection: Elvis myths, blues references, prison stories, and slow-burning threat—Nick doesn’t just sing about the South, he pulls its nightmares into today. Owning this version is like clutching a dark folk story in your grasp. It’s not refined; it's primal—fire and brimstone, blues and blood. A perfect album for half-remembered roads and nights brightened by moonlight.

sounds incredible, punchy, and full of energy! excellent pressing, mastered really well

  • Ugly Cover, Decent Sound

    4 out of 5 stars
    qazkgax722April 8, 2024United States🇺🇸

Once more, this version boasts decent audio quality but sports an unattractive cover. Stacked up against my 1988 German copy, it's downright hideous. The resolution's lower, and the print job feels cheaper. Volume-wise, it's a tad louder than the '88 edition. It's also a bit more squashed and heavy on the bass. And maybe a touch too digital.

  • Remastered Brilliance

Excellent remaster, it's got more openness and punch than those 2010 re-releases.
