Product description

This is a 2021 Numbered Reissue released as a LP.

John Cale's debut solo studio album, "Vintage Violence," is a captivating exploration of art rock, baroque pop, and proto-punk, all wrapped up in a singer-songwriter framework. Released in March 1970 under Columbia Records, this 13-track collection showcases Cale's versatility and innovative spirit, marking a significant departure from his work with The Velvet Underground. The album's 34-minute runtime is packed with lush, often piano-driven adult pop, reminiscent of post-Brill Building singer-songwriters like Todd Rundgren. "Vintage Violence" is a deeply personal journey through Cale's unique musical vision, featuring standout tracks like "Gideon's Bible," "Adelaide," and "Charlemagne." The album's eclectic mix of styles and influences makes it a timeless addition to any music enthusiast's collection. With its blend of experimental rock and contemporary pop, "Vintage Violence" is a testament to John Cale's enduring creativity and musical prowess.

Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.

  • Superior Sound Quality

    5 out of 5 stars
    Jezet_UxzxuSeptember 27, 2025United States🇺🇸

The sound quality of this pressing is vastly superior to the US version. It's so much clearer and less compressed, allowing the music to shine. His first solo album is truly a hidden treasure.

  • Puzzling Complaints, Great Sound

    4 out of 5 stars
    ArhaxiviEzzipdJanuary 27, 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm genuinely puzzled by the complaints. The record is flawlessly flat, utterly silent, and offers a wonderfully spacious soundstage. I can't confirm the source master or if it's been remastered, but my copy sounds fantastic.

  • First Print Cover Taller

    5 out of 5 stars
    fenefupevifjamzukyoDecember 15, 2024United States🇺🇸

Has anyone notice the cover on the first print run is about 1cm taller than the second one?

  • Topping the Reissue

    5 out of 5 stars
    fabnsodab231August 30, 2024United States🇺🇸

I'd say this one tops the new Columbia reissue I got.

  • Eno-Inspired Nashville Gem

    5 out of 5 stars
    ptd2854February 4, 2024United States🇺🇸

While it came before Brian Eno's solo work (the album's clearest inspiration), Vintage Violence has a sound akin to Nashville Skyline processed through Eno's Warm Jets, resulting in an amazing album!
