Product description

This 2022 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

"Where Is Brooklyn?" by Don Cherry is a captivating journey into the world of avant-garde jazz, originally released in 1969 and reissued in 2005 with remastered tracks. This album is a testament to Cherry's innovative spirit and his ability to blend various musical traditions, creating a sound that is both unique and timeless.

The album features five tracks, each offering a distinct exploration of free jazz and avant-garde styles. "Awake Nu," "Taste Maker," "The Thing," "There Is The Bomb," and "Unite" showcase Cherry's virtuosic trumpet playing alongside the dynamic interplay of Pharoah Sanders on tenor saxophone and piccolo, Henry Grimes on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. The chemistry between the musicians is palpable, making this a highly interactive and engaging listening experience.

Recorded in New York in 1966, "Where Is Brooklyn?" captures a pivotal moment in Don Cherry's musical evolution. The album's title track, "Where Is Brooklyn," reflects Cherry's deep connection to the vibrant jazz scene of Brooklyn, a place that significantly influenced his artistic development. The reissue on Blue Note Records includes remastered versions of the original tracks, ensuring that the music's clarity and depth are preserved for modern audiences.

With a duration of 42 minutes, this album is a concise yet powerful exploration of jazz's avant-garde possibilities. Don Cherry's ability to fuse elements of rock, African, Indian, and Arabic music traditions makes "Where Is Brooklyn?" a standout work in his discography. Whether you're a longtime fan of Don Cherry or a newcomer to his music, this album offers a compelling introduction to his innovative approach to jazz.

  • Stereo Sound Captivates Despite Flaws

    4 out of 5 stars

The sound is crisp and full of life, with an expansive soundstage. It's as if Don Cherry is playing from one speaker and Pharoah Sanders from the other. Personally, I find that stereo effect a bit much. I understand this music is quite complex, but I'm utterly captivated by it. My copy has quite a few soft ticks on Side 1, not enough to spoil the experience, but it would be better if they were less noticeable.

Spotless, crisp, and level. Sounds incredible. Kudos to Gray, Optimal and Blue Note.

  • Pharoah Sanders Masterpiece

Incredible tracks from the top of the industry. Strong, disciplined but unrestrained. If you're a fan of Ornette Coleman, you'll love this. The sound quality here, and honestly on most Blue Note records, is unmatched. And let's not forget f'ing Pharoah Sanders!!? Grab it.

  • Cherry's Remastered Skronk Session

    5 out of 5 stars
    keheexyayeq87March 20, 2025United States🇺🇸

This is the Kevin Gray vinyl remastering on a Japanese CD. I'm going off my recollection, but this sounds significantly better than the late seventies vinyl version I used to own. You can actually make out Henry Grimes' playing on this...definitely a skronk-filled session, leaning more towards Ornette than Cherry's "Complete Communion" and "Symphony for Improvisers"...shorter tracks...Blackwell and Grimes are fantastic, and Cherry and Sanders seem to be blending into one massive sound together. Probably best to grab this on the recent vinyl reissue since I never replaced my old vinyl, thinking it wasn't that impressive of a session... this remastering is a real improvement. Not sure if UHQCD is more than just a marketing buzzword, but this CD sounds fantastic. The liner notes are in Japanese, of course, with quotes from Don Was and Kevin Gray in English.

Perfect copy. No hiss, no bend, no skips, just great.

About Don Cherry

Don Cherry was an innovative American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist whose groundbreaking work bridged the gap between bebop and the experimental sounds of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in 1936, Cherry's career took off in the late 1950s, and he quickly became known for his distinctive sound and fearless approach to jazz. A founding member of Ornette Coleman's revolutionary quartet, Cherry's collaborations and solo work pushed the boundaries of the genre, earning him a place a... Read more
