Picked up another version and it sounds way better. Must have had a faulty press on the first one. JC's album is fantastic. Mean Eyed Cat is an amazing track.
The whole collection of The American Recordings is absolutely incredible, and every single time, no matter what I'm up to, I just have to pause and give it a listen. I've found the CDs to be top-notch quality, they play seamlessly, the audio is superb, Johnny Cash's vocals are outstanding, and the recordings are bursting with amazing energy. The booklets are well-made and visually appealing. My only hope is to get a vinyl version, as it's the best for my ears. I highly recommend it for listening. Fantastic album and tracks. But I can't stop wondering if the singing is not up to par. Is this a problem with the pressing or just how it was captured? Has anyone else picked up on this?
Following the triumphant commercial and artistic achievement of the initial volume in the “American Recordings” series, Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin opted to embark on a second installment of their collaborative musical endeavor. For this follow-up, Cash and Rubin chose to deviate from the more personal and stripped-down approach of the first “American Recording,” instead surrounding Cash’s voice and guitar with a full-fledged rock band. Naturally, not just any band would suffice for a legend like Cash. Whereas the first American album featured Cash as the primary performer throughout, this time he was accompanied by the formidable core of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers: Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, and Petty himself. Together, they deliver a selection of three outstanding originals written by Cash (“Country Boy”, “Mean Eyed Cat”, “Meet Me In Heaven”) and a diverse array of covers from artists as varied as Beck (“Rowboat”), Chris Cornell (“Rusty Cage”, where Cash showcases his impressive baritone range, as he would later do on Petty’s own “Southern Accents”) or the Carter Family (“The Kneeling Drunkard’s Plea”). While it's true that this full-band approach might diminish the emotional impact of Cash’s solo performances, the results remain exceptional, at times even surpassing the first volume. You can sense Cash’s comfort in being part of a band, as solemn as ever in the most intimate and spiritual moments (such as in “Spiritual” or the title track) but also quite jubilant in tracks like “Sea Of Heartbreak” or “I’ve Been Everywhere"... and always making the songs his own, a hallmark that would define the American Recordings series. In summary, an album that proved Cash still had plenty of firepower left, and he was ready to unleash it with Rubin.
The album's sound is incredible and it's definitely one of my top picks.
