Product Description

This 2021 Limited Edition Reissue LP is pressed on Orange vinyl.

"Fear Fun," the debut studio album from Father John Misty, is a captivating journey into the world of chamber pop, released on May 1, 2012, under Sub Pop Records. Clocking in at a concise 43 minutes, this album is a testament to the unique storytelling and musical prowess of Josh Tillman, the man behind the moniker Father John Misty.

With tracks like "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" and "Only Son of the Ladiesman," Tillman weaves a tapestry of vivid imagery and introspective lyrics, painting a picture of life's highs and lows. The album's title track, "Funtimes in Babylon," sets the tone for a collection that is as much about celebration as it is about contemplation. Songs like "I'm Writing a Novel" and "Now I'm Learning to Love the War" showcase Tillman's knack for blending the mundane with the profound, all wrapped in lush, orchestral arrangements.

"Fear Fun" is not just an album; it's an experience. From the haunting melodies of "Misty's Nightmares 1 & 2" to the playful yet poignant "Tee Pees 1-12," each track offers a glimpse into Tillman's world, inviting the audience to join him on a journey through love, loss, and everything in between. The album's closing track, "Everyman Needs a Companion," leaves a lasting impression, a poignant reminder of our shared human experience.

For fans of chamber pop and those looking for something fresh and engaging, "Fear Fun" is a must-listen. Father John Misty's debut is a masterclass in songwriting, blending rich instrumentation with deeply personal lyrics to create an album that is as memorable as it is meaningful.

  • Masterful Songwriting, Captivating Album

    5 out of 5 stars
    DowmDfevar6169 December 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is a stellar showcase of masterful songwriting and execution. Josh's vocals beautifully blend with the tunes, which are both melodically rich and undeniably catchy, making this LP utterly captivating. I never find myself skipping any track, and the record plays flawlessly (unlike Sub-Pop's release of his latest album).

  • Great 2010s Classic Album

    5 out of 5 stars
    XosuHdbeJott24 June 2025United States🇺🇸

Fantastic deal for the price it's currently at (approximately $20 USD). The sound quality is excellent and the gatefold album cover makes for an awesome piece of art. Contrary to a negative review I read, my copy has zero issues with sibilance. The rough draft of FJM's novel included is a cool extra. The music still holds up and I reckon it's a classic from the 2010's, no doubt about it.

  • Vinyl Sound Disappointment

    2 out of 5 stars
    Gopmowa136 June 2025United States🇺🇸

The sound quality is disappointing, it's quite thin and has too much hiss compared to Spotify. It's a real bummer, I was really excited to listen to this album on vinyl.

  • Frenetic Start to Father John Misty

    4 out of 5 stars
    rnzaag5029 May 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

My copy functions flawlessly and plays tracks smoothly. The audio quality is impressive too. This album marks a solid start to Josh Tillman's journey as Father John Misty. Among all his releases, this one remains the most frenetic and unconventional in his discography. There's a slight dip in energy mid-album (with "Ladies Man" being the exception) from tracks five to nine for me, but apart from that, it's a fantastic record. Quite a few of these songs are still staples in his live performances today, rotating in and out of his setlists. 7.6/10

  • Faulty pressing, skips, hissing

    2 out of 5 stars
    hirhurneuvlZEU5 March 2025United States🇺🇸

I gotta say, the pressing I got is really badly done. The vocals have awful hissing sounds all over the album, and both sides of the disc have skips at the start, messing up "Funtimes" for me. I might have to grab another copy since I love this album so much and haven't seen any other complaints about this pressing.
