  • Boris and Merzbow's Best Collaboration

    5 out of 5 stars
    qarzqeyp20 March 2024United States🇺🇸

In just five straightforward tracks and what I called a "misplaced demo from the '70s" with my buddy, this has swiftly become my top pick among Boris and Merzbow's team-ups. I admire Merzbow's creativity, but this mix, in my view, lets both artists truly shine for the first time, almost like it's their debut. I'm partial to Boris' sound taking a bit more lead to drive the melody, while Merzbow fills in the gaps with ambient noises, similar to his part in Heavy Rocks. "Klatter" appears to be intentionally recorded as a faded, tube-amped demo that seems like it was buried in a pile of records. When you listen, it's as if the record itself tells you why it's only five tracks and why it's vinyl-only. Without giving too much away, "Introduction" is just that: a moody setup for a reimagined "Akuma no Uta". Side A wraps up with the grand "Jane", showcasing some of the rawest screams by Wata and drumming by Atsuo that take you back to their earlier days, and serves as a perfect midpoint before flipping the record. Side B holds your focus with "Klatter 1" as it builds from the quiet, making the silence between tracks A3 and B1 part of the vibe. A reworked "Naki Kyoku" closes the record, leaving you craving more, and feeling like you've just snapped out of a trance, because even though the record shifts, its structure feels steady, blending the whole album into one continuous song or sound. This modest record caught me completely off guard, and I hope fellow Boris fans agree with me.
