In my opinion, this stands out as the top release among Herbie Mann’s Village Gate collection. The lineup here is generally stronger, with Chick Corea on piano adding a lot more intrigue. Plus, this album brings more musical diversity than the earlier ones, which is a refreshing shift.
I own every single Herbie Mann 'Village Gate' album, and let me tell you, THIS one stands out as the absolute best. To begin with, it's packed with more energy and excitement, and the audience is totally into it. Plus, you've got Chick Corea on piano, and you can really hear him sharpening his skills here. Don't even think about getting your 'yazz flute' fix anywhere else. Highly recommended.
