  ¡Me flipa Nina Simone, es increíble! Pero este disco, sin duda, es lo más decepcionante que he escuchado. Quizás fue un intento de adaptarse a las tendencias de los 80, con sintetizadores, cajas de ritmo y una voz que ya no estaba para muchos alardes. Pero bueno, a Nina le perdono todo (pasó por mucho) al fin y al cabo, tenía que ganarse la vida. Sobre la calidad de sonido, bastante bien aunque, claro, la voz de Nina está bastante difuminada y acompañada por coros, como ya he dicho, en esa época ya no estaba en su mejor momento.

• Mixed Nina Simone Comeback

  Nina's Back came out during a comeback phase in Nina Simone's career, and while her vocals still seem strong, the production is way overdone, with terrible mixing choices. For a While could've been a stunning song if not for the loud, cheap-sounding drums and awful synthetic strings drowning out Nina's voice. Saratoga suffers from the same issue - there's just too much clutter in the song, ruining the atmosphere, and Nina's vocals are way too low in the mix. Whoever was in charge of mixing these tracks should've been shown the door. Despite my complaints, there are a few highlights on the album - I'm really fond of Touching And Caring, especially the brass section, and Nina's piano work on this track is incredible. The lyrics of It's Cold Out There still ring true today, and it's one of the few songs on the album that complements Nina's voice well. I Sing Just to Know That I'm Alive is another standout - the Caribbean vibe suits it perfectly, and I enjoy the horn sections, with Nina sounding like she's having a great time. Overall, I'd suggest giving this album a miss unless you're a huge fan, but even then, you probably won't find much to rave about here. Nina's previous album, A Single Woman, is definitely the better choice.

  This 1988 German pressing isn't too shabby in terms of sound quality. I haven't had the chance to compare it with other versions, but it seems to have decent dynamics, at least as far as I can tell.
