Lucinda Williams has been putting on entire album performances for quite some time now, and, I kid you not, she's often so unfamiliar with her own songs that she has to use sheet music. Now, I'm not sure if this is a new thing in music, but "This Sweet Old World" is essentially a re-recording of her 1992 album "Sweet Old World." First off, the album is quite lengthy, clocking in at seventy-one minutes with the bonus tracks, and for the most part, it's filled with slow, melancholic, and intimate songs that seem to come from a different time in Lucinda Williams' life … though there are a couple of upbeat rockers that would work well with a jangly Rickenbacker guitar. The main problem is that Lucinda stays faithful to all the tracks, giving them a fresh coat of paint, but not trying to give them a new look, which, in my opinion, could have breathed new life into them and made the album even more engaging. That said, there are a few surprise demo versions of songs from that era that have been expanded upon and add something new to the mix; though not much. When "Sweet Old World" came out in 1992, it was thought that the album would help establish Williams as a musical gem, but the reality is that Lucinda's life spiraled out of control in so many ways that she never became the star she could have been, yet she's always managed to deliver a few songs that keep you wondering when she'll create her magnum opus. There are people who love to say things like “it’s all so familiar,” well of course it is, it’s not just déjà vu, it’s the same old wine in the same old bottle. Sure, I can fully appreciate revisiting a song or two and transforming them into something else entirely, but if this 'is' a new musical trend, I'm afraid you're going to hear me banging my head against the wall. There wasn't any instrumentation or technology that would have made this album any better in 1992 than it is today, just a voice and attitude from twenty-five years ago … though to be honest, isn't that why we go to concerts, to hear an artist's yesterday songs today.
Nice pressing. Excellent mastering. Captivating tracks. Plus, there's Lucinda and her band bringing the music to life.
