This vinyl is a true classic, let me tell you. The tracks were clearly made with a ton of heart and dedication. The record itself is a bit on the quiet side, but if you crank up the gain and bass, it'll sound absolutely fantastic. That Pharcyde sample (Summer in the city) and the superstition cover? They're so good, they could easily stand alone on their own 12 inch.
Put aside for a moment that you can easily find this in charity shops, car boot sales, and record fairs for practically nothing. Then, overlook Quincy's hits with Donna Summer and Michael Jackson (like it makes a difference) and all the places it's been sampled over the years and years of, well, let's call it "borrowing". At the end of the day, this is the perfect starting point for soul/funk for anyone even slightly interested. You could say it's the best Quincy Jones album out there (except for Mellow Madness, which isn't too hard to find if you're willing to dig a bit).
This album is a true gem of seventies slow and mid-tempo grooves. A must-have for any funk, soul, or jazz enthusiast! The intro to Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer In The City" was used by Nightmare On Wax in his "Night Interlude" track on the Warp album Smokers Delight, two decades after its release.
