This album deserves a perfect 5-star rating, it's James at their absolute finest! The drumming is incredible, the energy is infectious, and the lyrics are top-notch. Every track on this record is a gem, from the quirky 'An earwig crawled into my ear' to the powerful 'Scarecrow' and the smooth 'She's coming on strong!'. 'So many ways' is just hip, 'Johnny Yen' is a killer, and 'Summer song' is a delight, and that's just side one! Crank up the volume when you're in a great mood and alone, and let the magic happen. This is how James sounded when they toured with The Smiths on the 'Meat is murder' tour: full of enthusiasm, energy, and a touch of madness - absolutely 'fantastic'!

A promising first album, in my opinion, and I wholeheartedly endorse it, particularly for those who appreciate offbeat 80s indie music. Bands like The Smiths, Orange Juice, and R.E.M. don't sound like James at all, yet they're influential all the same.
