In this writer's opinion the best DT CD by a country mile. the band are technically superb as usual and LaBrie finally realises his limitations and keeps his vocals in the lower register,Recommende without reservation,9.3
This is the most important album of my life.I could never afford the original or the earlier reissues, they were just too expensive. So when this new version came out, I grabbed it right away. Huge thanks to Rhino for making it happen. Of course, I can’t compare it to the OG, but the sound quality is excellent. I’m honestly thrilled with it.
It was the last Dream Theater album I got a physical copy on its very release date.I had already heard signs of stagnation on 'Octavarium', but most of the songs there were quite solid, and then there was the exceptional title song.Up to this moment, as I see it, every and each of the band´s releases had a clear personality that made them unique. Here, however, I saw clear repetition of previous schemes for the first time. Also, it´s the first time that a Dream Theater song bored me: 'Repentance'. Its slow and repeating first part and Its second section, made up by fellow musicians telling stories of apologies, repentance, regrets... over an ominous instrumental and choral background didn't do much for me.Also, we had 'The Dark Eternal Night', saved by the wild instrumental middle section, but overall a quite simple and straight forward metal song, that recovered the spirit of 'Train Of Thought', but without its key elements; surprise and sense of musical adventure.'Constant Motion' follows the same pattern but, without any moment close to the aforementioned middle section of 'The Dark Eternal Night', and despite of some solid riffing courtesy of John Petrucci, it stays as an overall unoffensive piece of music.'Forsaken' was a smartly chosen single for the album; a quite simple song for the band's standards that works well in its own terms, but doesn't offer anything else (and nothing less!) than a nice melody. On the other hand, the Muse rip off named 'Prophets Of War', with its dramatic choirs and frenetic rhythm section is, ironically, a fresh take on the band's sound, and thoroughly enjoyable, as it is 'The Ministry Of Lost Souls' and both parts of 'In The Presence Of Enemies'.Overall, not a bad album, but really under par of what one could expect from the band that once led the progressive metal scene.
Just to verify, this German pressing does NOT have the pressing error the U.S. version does.
this is probably my favourite d.t album at the moment , for me this is heavier than train of thought.the only negative i can find is that i'm sure i can hear a click track thing underneath song one when they start playing flight of the bumble bees which really pisses me off and i have been noticing this on some of their other albums as well.if i am right and not hearing things i wonder why they wouldn't eliminate the click track once the drums were put down ?really strange.the dvd that comes with it is just magnifique.4/5 overall.
