The sleeve is alright, nothing special but decent for what you pay. The record's sound quality is fantastic on my setup, highlighting plenty of mid and high frequencies - exactly the kind of audio I was after.
Incredible-sounding record, it's labeled as stereo-mix but it truly feels like mono to me. The mastering is phenomenal, Bob's voice is 'right up front' ya know? The harmonica, guitar, all instruments & vocals sound amazing. The vinyl is also completely silent. Excellent pressing!
Seems like Dylan's fourth album wasn't exactly a hit with critics or fans back in the day, with many accusing him of going "too commercial". Oh, the irony! It's amusing to look back at the early sixties and see how everyone was pinning their hopes on Dylan to be the next big thing in folk music, following in the footsteps of Dylan Thomas and Woody Guthrie, and keeping pace with Pete Seeger. Giving it a listen now, 'Another Side' is undoubtedly a folk album through and through, crafted for its era yet timeless. It's an album Dylan made for himself, not trying to be anything for anyone else. And even with that approach, you still get several Dylan classics that will stand the test of time as some of the greatest songs of the 20th century.
I'm a huge fan of Bob Dylan's early work, his more recent stuff just doesn't hit the same. Back in his prime, Dylan was an absolute superstar, a true mega talent.
Dylan's fourth record showcases how spontaneity can quickly turn into mere carelessness. "Another Side" was laid down in one take, leading to an odd blend of mediocre tunes decently delivered and almost brilliant ones poorly executed. 'Spanish Harlem Incident' stands out as the sole track where Dylan truly shines, offering a strong rendition of a well-crafted song; elsewhere on the album, he seems to be fighting an uphill battle. 'Chimes of Freedom' and 'My Back Pages' should've resonated with grandiosity (as they do live), but their lackluster delivery robs them of their full effect. Dylan comes across as disconnected...and he was, naturally, which paved the way for the major shift heard on "Bringing It All Back Home.
