Fallen Angels doesn't feature any faithful renditions of the original tracks, making it simple to dismiss as just Bob Dylan doing his thing and stamping his signature on these songs ... almost to the extent that they're barely recognizable. I can't help but question what's happening with his second covers album, and I've got my theories, having witnessed this approach numerous times from other artists past their prime. There are some subdued jazz arrangements here that should pack more punch and vitality, yet Dylan, a massive jazz enthusiast, has opted to almost conceal what he cherishes most. “That Old Black Magic” has been transformed into a rockabilly shuffle, “It Had To Be You” is barely coherent, as he seems to be reciting these songs rather than singing them. Truth be told, this album comes across like another nostalgic trip down memory lane [much like Sinatra's work], attempting to figure out his place in the first half of the 21st century, or if it even matters. You might label this collection of songs playful, but please, don't call them exceptional or uplifting, as they feel rather insubstantial, echoes of echoes, performed by a man who may or may not be fully present during the recording of these tracks. Strangely though, the songs do cohere, but mainly in a way where Dylan is trying to demonstrate that these vintage ballads still hold relevance, and consequently, so does Dylan. Naturally, there will be those who insist it's all genius, but it's not, and it's a real pity that, despite his brilliance, Bob Dylan can't take his time and share his perspective on his later years, or the worlds he's experienced, instead of retreating to some bygone comfort zone where he no longer needs to look out of his window.But ... you might find it all endearing and romantic, so by all means, join in the celebration with Mr. Dylan, for his times, they certainly have evolved.

The tunes are absolutely heavenly. Unfortunately, they're handled by a bunch of clueless folks who clearly don't care about their job. This trilogy is way too good for such neglect; maybe Mofi or someone like them will step in and put out a nice little box set. Just my hopeful thinking, though.
The quality of my copy is fantastic, I suppose I struck gold. There's hardly any disturbance except for the odd tick, and the tunes are absolutely delightful.
