With a runtime of just 37 minutes, this concise yet powerful collection of tracks showcases Joplin's raw talent and unparalleled vocal prowess.

The album features eight iconic songs, including the title track "Kozmic Blues," which was released as a single and has become one of Joplin's most beloved performances. Each song on the album is a testament to Joplin's ability to infuse her unique style into a variety of genres, from blues to rock to soul.

"Kozmic Blues" was recorded on June 25, 1969, and the entire album captures the spirit of the late 1960s, a time of cultural and musical revolution. I can't believe I haven't chimed in on this awesome turntable yet! Just gave it a whirl today, and wow, the sound is crisp with barely any surface noise. It's absolutely killer on my setup...(Fluance RT-82 w/Acrylic Platter, ATN-XP cart/5 stylus. Nobsound T3 Phono Amp, Aiyima A07 Pro, Kicker KB6B, & 2x Polk PSW10 Subs...Simple Low Cost Setup)...Enjoy the tunes!

  • Janis Joplin's Stellar Kozmic Blues

    3 out of 5 stars
    rzduuccoiboNovember 26, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

This is one of those mind-blowing albums, a record where Janis just sounds so incredible it brings tears to your eyes. Just listen to the track “Try,” a lively sixteen beats per bar, a song so precisely metronomic it evokes memories of Stax Records, yet so beautifully stuttering that Janis seems to be dancing in her own world. That said, her band is truly awful here, completely off-key, lacking the basic elements of quality arrangements, yet somehow on Kozmic Blues, Janis has never sounded better, and the band she’s paired with are doing the right thing for her. That being said, there’s no way these musicians can last for more than one album, because Janis deserves better, she deserves everything, where far superior musicianship would only enhance her captivating musical visions, leaving her audience stunned, as all the space in front of Janis is needed to give her room to breathe, room to roam and melt away the haze you walked into the show with. What Janis is delivering here is first-rate psychedelic soul-driven blues. Kozmic Blues marked a change and direction from the two albums she recorded with Big Brother & The Holding Company in San Francisco, this time heading east with the Kozmic Blues Band, settling into a New York City studio just fourteen months after Cheap Thrills introduced the world to what this woman had to offer. While much of the music here consists of cover material, what Janis brings to the table with her R&B influences fits her perfectly, yet I’m compelled to say that if she had a better band, this album, as good as it is, would have left listeners utterly speechless. There are many who will say that the record is an acquired taste, and while Kozmic Blues will forever remain in the shadow of Pearl, it’s a stellar effort that never fails to make everything right, even with all its shortcomings. As for the original vinyl itself, the pressing is remarkably good, holding up for years with superb definition and a liberatingly free and airy sound; with the new 180-gram edition sounding even better. The album art itself is striking, noticeably different from the album covers by other female artists of the day, almost announcing front and center what is contained within, showing that Janis was here to sing, with the vibrant colors of the jacket reflecting the revolutionary intensity and rawness of her stage performance. *** The Fun Facts: The first edition of this record contained only the album title on the spine of the jacket, later the album title was added to a sticker designed by R. Crumb and affixed to the shrink-wrap. Finding one of those R. Crumb stickers is an impossible task … I’m just glad I never revolved the shrink-wrap, where it still contains the sticker.
