Product description

This 2024 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

Dive into the vibrant world of jazz with Joe Henderson's "Mode For Joe," a seminal work that encapsulates the spirit of the 1960s hard bop and bebop scenes. Released in 1966 under the prestigious Blue Note Records, this album is the fifth studio effort from the renowned saxophonist, showcasing his mastery of the tenor saxophone.

"Mode For Joe" is a testament to Henderson's dynamic range and innovative spirit. Recorded on January 27, 1966, the album features a powerful septet, the largest ensemble Henderson had assembled for his Blue Note dates. The lineup includes legendary musicians like Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, and Bobby Hutcherson, who together create a rich tapestry of sound that is both energetic and nuanced.

The album's six tracks, including standout pieces like "A Shade Of Jade" and the title track "Mode For Joe," offer a diverse range of styles within the jazz genre. From the infectious rhythms of "Caribbean Fire Dance" to the introspective "Granted," each song highlights Henderson's versatility and the band's collective virtuosity. The remastered versions, particularly the Rudy Van Gelder Edition with 24 Bit Mastering, ensure that the music's depth and clarity are preserved, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the intricate details of the performances.

With a duration of just under 50 minutes, "Mode For Joe" is a concise yet powerful exploration of jazz. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The blend of hard bop, bebop, and cool jazz elements makes it a timeless addition to any music collection.

  • Masterful Modal Jazz Album

    5 out of 5 stars
    sai_tizaaJanuary 3, 2026United Kingdom🇬🇧

When it comes to mastering, two renowned experts, Bernie Grundman and Chris Bell, are involved, so the album should be in good hands. The stereo image is quite wide, with Henderson & Chambers(!) on the right and Morgan & Fuller on the left. Combined with Hutcherson's vibes, this creates a spacious, somewhat surreal atmosphere that seems to fit the music. During full ensemble parts, Fuller's trombone is a bit distorted—perhaps it was like that on the original recording, I'm not sure. Regarding the pressing and quality control, it was done by United, who have a mixed reputation. The record is heavy, flat, and centered, looking good overall. However, it's not a perfect pressing for me, with a few unexpected pops on A1. As for the artwork and jacket, the classic Reid Miles design is faithfully reproduced here. The sleeve is made of moderately sturdy cardstock with direct printing—similar to the Classic Vinyl Series sleeves. It's not exceptional, but it's not bad either. About the music, it's beautiful, performed by master musicians. I love the lineup here, and any concern about it being overcrowded is well-managed in the sessions. The full septet often plays together in the heads, with ample time and space given to different members to solo on various compositions. The music has a restrained, cool, modal feel, with a great variety of color and texture provided by the different musicians. Highly recommended.

When it comes to mastering, two heavyweights, Bernie Grundman and Chris Bell, are at the helm, so it's in good hands. The stereo image is quite wide, with Henderson & Chambers(!) on the right and Morgan & Fuller on the left. This, along with Hutcherson's vibes, gives the album a somewhat staged, eerie vibe that fits the music well. In parts where the whole band plays, Fuller's trombone is a bit distorted—maybe a bit too much. Could be on the original recording, not sure. As for the pressing and quality control, it's pressed at United, who have a mixed reputation. The record is heavy, flat, and centered. Looks good. But it's not a perfect pressing for me, with a few unexpected pops on A1. Regarding the artwork and jacket, the classic Reid Miles artwork is beautifully reproduced here. The sleeve is moderately sturdy cardstock with the print directly on it—basically the same as the Classic Vinyl Series sleeves that followed. Nothing too good or too bad about them. About the music, it's gorgeous, played by master musicians. I love the lineup here, and any worry that it might be overcrowded is handled well in the sessions. The full septet often joins in on the heads, with each member given enough time and space to solo on different compositions. The music has a restrained, somewhat cool, modal feel, with a great variety of color and texture from the different band members. Highly recommended.

  • Warped Record Returned

Mine didn't make the cut... Arrived all bent out of shape. It doesn't skip but it makes a scratchy, messed up noise in the left speaker whenever the needle lifts due to the warp. Sending it back to the shop.
