Product description

This 2025 Reissue LP is pressed on Marbled vinyl.

Portrait In Jazz, released in 1960, is a landmark album by the Bill Evans Trio, featuring the legendary pianist Bill Evans alongside drummer Paul Motian and the remarkable young bassist Scott LaFaro. This studio album is a testament to the trio's exceptional chemistry and musical prowess, showcasing a blend of cool jazz and hard bop that has stood the test of time.

The album opens with the evocative "Come Rain Or Come Shine," setting the stage for a journey through a collection of jazz standards and original compositions. Standout tracks include "Autumn Leaves," presented in two distinct takes, highlighting the trio's versatility and improvisational skills. "Witchcraft" and "When I Fall In Love" offer a glimpse into the romantic and lyrical side of Evans' playing, while "Peri's Scope" and "What Is This Thing Called Love?" demonstrate the trio's dynamic interplay and harmonic sophistication.

"Spring Is Here" and "Someday My Prince Will Come" are rendered with a delicate touch, showcasing Evans' signature piano style and LaFaro's innovative bass work. The album concludes with two takes of "Blue In Green," a composition that has become synonymous with Evans' introspective and contemplative approach to jazz.

Portrait In Jazz is not just an album; it's a snapshot of a pivotal moment in jazz history, capturing the Bill Evans Trio at the height of their creative powers. The album's pristine sound quality and transparent mastering allow listeners to fully appreciate the subtleties and nuances of the trio's performance. Whether you're a longtime fan of Bill Evans or a newcomer to his music, Portrait In Jazz is an essential addition to any jazz collection, offering a timeless exploration of the genre's rich traditions and innovative spirit.

  • Evans' Bass Shines Classic

    4 out of 5 stars
    xhbegu2233January 5, 2026United States🇺🇸

Evans' initial record showcasing the lineup that would go on to create three more albums together before bassist Scott LaFaro's tragic passing in '61. Once more, there are fantastic renditions of classic tunes, but this time the bass truly shines. It's all top-notch, a genuine classic.

  • Jazz Album: Sweet Sound, Aimless Improvisation

    5 out of 5 stars
    cihtomuijqe27January 4, 2026United Kingdom🇬🇧

This wasn't a costly purchase, yet it delivers a pleasant sound. The balance is good, with a nice shimmer and sweetness on the higher keys. The blue vinyl is impressively clean and flat. I must admit, though I'm a fan of Bill Evans... there's an excess of jazz that ditches structure and melody for aimless improvisation. Even the top jazz musicians hopped on the "avant-garde freedom of expression, we're too cool to play the melody" bandwagon, which was all the rage in the 50's and after. It's a shame because endless notes without melodic anchor aren't all that engaging. There's only so much of that you can tolerate... Coltrane nailed it on My Favourite Things but Evans strays a bit here. It's worth the buy, but bear that in mind... if you find that style of jazz a tad irritating.

Audio quality is out of this world. Not a single noise. Unbelievable! And yeah, the musicality is absolutely fantastic.

  • Digital Remaster Sounds Fantastic

    5 out of 5 stars
    omkigitDecember 21, 2025United States🇺🇸

After converting it to digital, I checked the waveform and it's clear this is from a digital source. The soundstage isn't from 1959. The bass is centered, which was done for the 1983 reissue. BUT it sounds fantastic. Way better than the OJC '83 version.

  • Mixing Ruins Mastering

    3 out of 5 stars
    Fubiyuka70November 21, 2025United States🇺🇸

Mastering is fantastic, but the mixing is truly awful. Drums and bass are panned way over to the right, making it nearly impossible to listen with headphones.
