Product description

This 2020 Reissue LP is housed in a gatefold, pressed on 180g vinyl.

"Tender Moments," released in 2004 by Blue Note Records, is a remastered gem from jazz legend McCoy Tyner, originally recorded in 1968. This album marks a significant milestone in Tyner's career, as it was one of his first major forays into large ensemble arrangements, following the passing of his mentor, John Coltrane. The album features a stellar nonet, showcasing Tyner's mastery of color and texture through intricate compositions and improvisations.

The six-track album spans a concise yet impactful 37 minutes, blending elements of hard bop, cool jazz, bebop, and even free jazz. Each track is a testament to Tyner's technical prowess and melodic sensibilities. "Mode To John" pays homage to his late boss and friend, while "Man From Tanganyika" and "The High Priest" demonstrate Tyner's ability to craft warm, playful, and technically impressive pieces. "Utopia" and "All My Yesterdays" further highlight his skill in creating soulful, acoustic jazz that resonates with both seasoned jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

"Tender Moments" is not just a collection of songs but a snapshot of a pivotal moment in McCoy Tyner's career, capturing his evolution as a bandleader and composer. The album's rich history and exceptional musicianship make it a standout addition to any jazz collection.

  • Tone Poets Shine Bright

    5 out of 5 stars
    rarbxocuomJanuary 6, 2026United States🇺🇸

Based on my listening setup, which includes a custom-built U-Turn Orbit turntable with an integrated Pluto amp and an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, paired with Edifier R2000db powered speakers, I'm sharing my thoughts. I'm no audiophile, but I'm working on it! The record sounds fantastic and has a lot of energy to my ears. These Tone Poets are top-notch all around! As for the music, McCoy Tyner was an artist I struggled with for a long time. But the more I dive into jazz, the more I'm becoming a fan. This isn't beginner-friendly jazz, in my opinion, but those softer moments? They sound incredible!

  • Enjoyable Tone Poet Quality

    5 out of 5 stars

Received my copy today, and man, it's fantastic! The sound quality is top-notch, with a clean, flat press—no annoying pops or clicks to be found. I've got quite a few Tone Poet Series records now, and honestly, I just don't get all the whining and moaning. What more do you want for around $30-$40? Yeah, the inner sleeves are trash, but big deal—just swap 'em out for a new one after you give the record a good clean. Look, we should be grateful these are being re-released at all. So quit your complaining and start enjoying the music. Cheers!

  • Black B '77 UK Pressings

    4 out of 5 stars

I'm really into these 'Black B' label '77 UK pressings that you can still snag for a fair price. They usually sound fantastic, and this one's no different. It's a bummer they didn't include heavyweight tip-on jackets, though.

  • Exotic Horns, Muddy Mix

    3 out of 5 stars
    uedlduawiJune 29, 2025United States🇺🇸

This album boasts a solid collection of tracks with a hint of exotic flair woven throughout. It's a pretty neat listen, genuinely pleasurable. Hailing from a late 60’s Blue Note recording, this session stands out with a bigger horn ensemble than typical. However, in my opinion, RVG seems to have a tough time nailing down a sharp mix on the horns when they all join in together. The horn section gets a bit muddy when everyone plays at once. When the action is less crowded, the mix shines much better, but all in all, it's not the clearest of recordings - it's quite a raw and unpolished mix. This Tone Poet version is likely as good as this record will ever sound, given the mix, and the pressing itself was solid with no excessive surface noise or anything.

  • Loud, Disappointing B Side

    4 out of 5 stars
    hotvnyiwJune 25, 2025United States🇺🇸

Blown away by the musical performances, but the pressing quality left me wanting, particularly on the B side. It's unnecessarily loud, and yes, even after cleaning both the record and the needle. What a shame!

About McCoy Tyner

McCoy Tyner, born Alfred McCoy Tyner in Philadelphia in 1938, was a titan of jazz piano, renowned for his powerful, propulsive style and innovative approach to harmony. His journey began with the legendary John Coltrane Quartet in the early 1960s, where his thunderous chords and intricate melodies became a cornerstone of the group's groundbreaking sound.
