As a devoted Bowie collector, I felt compelled to have this EP—even though I already possess the 12" version of David Bowie - Love Is Lost (Hello Steve Reich Mix By James Murphy For The DFA), which is undoubtedly the standout track. I had previously downloaded the digital version on iTunes, so I was familiar with the content. I do appreciate the transition from "Atomica," and the harpsichord rendition of "I'd Rather Be High" (created for a Louis Vuitton commercial) is quite cool, with an ending that hints at the eeriness found on ★. The remaining songs are satisfactory outtakes. However, the mastering and pressing quality is disappointing. The sound lacks clarity when compared to the digital original. It's not the vinyl "warmth" I'm referring to; it just comes across as a bit flat and less dynamic than I had anticipated. I played The Next Day LP on the same system, and this EP clearly doesn't match its sound quality. Regarding the pressing by United: The first copy I purchased had to be returned due to significant warping and noticeable scuffs and pops. The second copy was better but still slightly off-center. The grooves appear quite shallow. Still, I'm glad to have it on vinyl. I guess I'm just that kind of fan.
After giving my copy a full listen, I must say it sounds absolutely fantastic. There were a few odd marks on Side 1 that resembled stitches, but thankfully, they don't cause any noise. My copy is actually completely silent. It's an awesome release with a top-notch mastering that'll really put your sub through its paces.
This is an amazing release, and I had never listened to this material before. No problems with the record coming out of the sleeve, perfect pressing too. Fantastic stuff here.
The record itself seems really good, but the inner sleeve was super clingy! I messed it up trying to get it out 😭
