As usual, he's absolutely fantastic! The album is amazing, with some truly fantastic songs. Bowie's taken yet another unique musical direction here.
Went back to this one today and it still hits just as hard. An absolute classic. Really dig how he messed around with drum n' bass. In my book, this is his finest and most adventurous stuff. Totally in love with it. Never would've guessed Bowie and drum n' bass could mix so well. And that pressing? Spot on.
Fantastic audio quality. The album does exhibit compression (which I believe is done on purpose). Despite that, you can truly sense the power of the album's intense sections (it certainly doesn't sound dull at all). I wouldn't go as far as to say this release is trash, unlike what the previous reviewer mentioned. I've certainly heard much worse out there. The music does have a clear and defined sound, not muddy or distorted like some records can be. However, I wouldn't label this as an 'audiophile' record, as the reissue label suggests. The sound quality isn't bad, but it doesn't seem to offer any significant improvement over CD or digital files, except maybe a bit more depth in the bass. I'm skeptical that this was originally recorded analog, given its highly electronic and stylized sound, so it's never going to shine on vinyl. That said, it doesn't sound awful, just very sterile and cold, not what you'd expect from vinyl. They did an okay job here, making for a decent listen. It seems to be mastered quite quietly too. I have to turn it up to get the impact I want. Also, no pressing issues on my copy, it's flat, centered, and plays silently with a quiet background and no noise on the grooves or between tracks.
Sound ain't perfect, but it's not bad in my ears. Friday Music might not be for the super picky listeners, but they put out some decent records, this one included.
