Over the past ten years, it's been quite entertaining to observe Hans Zimmer's transformation from a recluse to a veritable superstar in the world of soundtracks; he's gone from avoiding live performances to being a constant presence on stages worldwide. But was it really necessary to release this new collection of live recordings over five years after "Live In Prague" (2017), especially when, in my opinion, Zimmer hasn't composed a true masterpiece since "Interstellar"? That all depends on personal taste. In my view, the primary appeal of "Live" is that it feels more polished than its predecessor. I'd argue that the music here benefits from the experience Zimmer and his team have gained through years of touring. It's less of a note-for-note replication of the studio versions, and the arrangements are more vibrant. It's also fascinating to hear how newer soundtracks like "Dunkirk," "Dune," "Wonder Woman" (some truly stunning, anthemic harmonies here), and "Dark Phoenix" translate to a live setting. However, my personal highlights remain his pre-"Dunkirk" pieces, such as the "Gladiator" suite (including the breathtaking "Duduk Of The North" theme, originally a b-side in the soundtrack's special edition) and the suites from "Man Of Steel," "The Dark Knight," and "Pirates Of The Caribbean" (the latter includes "One Day," which remains one of my all-time favorite, most lyrical, and evocative moments from Zimmer's entire catalog). It's also fantastic to finally hear excerpts from "The Last Samurai" live, and it's always a joy to revisit moments from "Inception" and "Interstellar"... plus, you finally get to experience Lisa Gerrard's haunting voice in a live context! Overall, perhaps "Live In Prague" will resonate more with Zimmer's longtime fans like myself, but "Live" is more than just an update. It can be thoroughly appreciated by both new and old fans alike, serving as a great introduction and overview of his work.
Excellent album, though, as others have noted, the packaging is disappointing. The initial disc had a lot of crackling, while the rest were slightly better. After giving them a good soak in my Spincare and swapping the sleeves for anti-static ones, the difference is amazing. Sony Classic should be embarrassed to have their name on this.
Same old story. There's nothing 'audiophile' about constant pops and crackles. The whole album is almost impossible to listen to. Do yourself a favor and save your cash to catch Zimmer live instead.
The pressing is alright. The sound is vibrant and deep, but I had to clean all of them twice before I could listen without any interference from all the dust they picked up during making. The most disappointing aspect of this release is the sleeve. It clings to the vinyl. It's flimsy and flimsy. It can't keep the records secure and my package was damaged during transit from the records „jumping“ around. This music deserves better than this.
