As someone who's always been passionate about music, there are a couple of things that I truly value when appreciating a musician's work: their ability to play a real instrument, not just relying on songwriting, and their capacity to perform live. Of course, the practicalities of live performances differ greatly depending on the musician. For instance, a solo rock guitarist has a much simpler setup than a classical composer or, in this case, a film score composer, who requires an orchestra and a massive logistical effort to pull off a live performance. So, when I heard that Hans Zimmer, one of my all-time favorite film composers, was releasing a live album, I was thrilled. "Live In Prague" features Zimmer alongside 72 musicians, including longtime collaborators like Nick Glennie-Smith on keyboards, renowned solo artists such as Tina Guo on cello and Rusanda Panfili on violin… and, quite surprisingly (or perhaps not, considering it's Zimmer), the electric guitars of Johnny Marr from The Smiths and the extraordinary Guthrie Govan, a true virtuoso and one of the most incredible guitarists around, whose playing added magic to one of my all-time favorite albums, Steven Wilson's "Hand. Cannot. Erase." Together, this incredible ensemble revisits some of Zimmer's most famous works, like "Inception," "Interstellar," "Gladiator," "The Thin Red Line," "The DaVinci Code," and "The Dark Knight" trilogy, as well as some of his lesser-known pieces, such as "Rain Man," "Crimson Tide," "True Romance," and "Driving Miss Daisy." A standout moment is the "Gladiator" suite, which includes parts of Zimmer's most iconic work, featuring a guitar trio with Michael Einziger, Guthrie Govan, and Zimmer himself during "The Battle." Overall, it's a truly delightful experience that showcases a side of Hans Zimmer rarely seen in film composers: the live performer and entertainer.
The record I received was well-pressed, with no skips or hissing sounds. It's got a lively sound, and you can really hear each instrument clearly on most songs.
